No. 8 UC Irvine had a successful trip east to Provo, Utah, bringing home a pair of wins over No. 5 Lewis and No. 12 Loyola with help from a standout effort by Karl Apfelbach.

The junior opposite started the weekend with a team-high 11 putaways in the upset of Lewis and then notched a career-high 22 kills and finished out a double-double with 15 digs on Saturday. Apfelbach gives the Anteaters another option besides All-American middle Scott Stadick.

No. 3 BYU lost to No. 12 Loyola, but rebounded with a win over Lewis. Coach Shawn Olmstead was happy with the way hit team adjusted and also had to be pleased with his team’s .410 hitting effort against the Flyers.

Loyola gave all it had in a five-set win over BYU, with seven players suffering from the flu, but couldn’t find a way to get past UCI. Dan Leclair paced the team with 15 kills and seven blocks after moving to the opposite position against the Cougars, but managed just three kills against the Anteaters. Colin Mahan and Jeff Jendryk picked up the slack with 14 and 10 putaways respectively in Saturday’s loss.

Redshirt sophomore outside Ryan Coenen paced Lewis on Friday, but was held to nine kills and a -.036 hitting effort on Saturday. Sophomore outside Kyle Bugee led the Flyers with 11 kills against BYU.
