Ohio State Wraps Non-Conference Play with Sweep of Dayton

BEXLEY, Ohio – A more efficient and balanced offensive attack lifted Ohio State (RV) over Dayton in a sweep to close out the Buckeye Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Buckeyes outhit the Flyers .336 to .248 and racked up nine more kills (49-40) to take the win. OSU also won the service game 4-1. Both teams managed four blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Ayanna Swan (12) and senior outside Luisa Schirmer (11) paced the Ohio State offense with double-digit efforts, while senior outside Ashley Wenz (9) and sophomore middle blocker Madison Smeathers (7) were right behind. Wenz hit at a team-best .471 clip, while Swan and Smeathers turned in two blocks apiece. Freshman libero Hannah Gruensfelder managed 18 dig to lead the backcourt.

Junior outside Lauren Bruns racked up a match-high 15 kills, while senior middle Amber Erhahon followed with 10 and junior middle Kendyll Brown added eight on the Flyer side of the ledger. Brown hit at a team-leading .438 clip with just one error in 16 swings, while Erhahon put up a team-best three blocks. Senior setter Jane Emmenecker paced the defense with 10 digs, rounding out a double double with 35 assists.

A trio of Schirmer kills and an ace helped lift OSU to an early 7-4 lead in the match. The Buckeyes built the advantage to five at 11-6 with putaways by three different players. A 3-0 run, including a pair of Swan terminations, pushed the margin to seven at 17-10. Down 18-11, Dayton mounted a comeback, slicing the deficit to one at 19-18 as Sloan and Erhahon downed two kills each. Ohio State got its first set point try at 24-20 on a kill by Smeathers. The Flyers thwarted two efforts, before Swan capped the win at 25-22.

Ohio State seized a 13-6 lead in Set 2 as Swan added two kills and two blocks. Schirmer also notched three kills in the opening stages. Dayton would get no closer than five the rest of the way as the teams traded points. A Wenz kill put Gruensfelder at the end line, from which served up the set-capping ace at 25-18.

The teams split the first 10 points of Set 3. Ohio State scored three straight to pull away momentarily, but Dayton countered with a 3-0 run of its own, including two Buckeye miscues. OSU regained the edge at 10-8 on a Wenz putaway, but the Flyers stayed close, eventually going up 14-13 on a Jordan Albarran kill. The lead changed hands three more times in the set before the Buckeyes grabbed a 19-18 edge, one which it would not relinquish. OSU went up three at 23-20 on a Schirmer kill, then finished the match at 25-21 soon after with putaways by Wenz and Schirmer.

The No. 25 Ohio State women’s volleyball team wrapped up its non-conference schedule by taking down Dayton in straight sets (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) on Saturday at Capital Center. The team finished the Buckeye Invitational with a 2-1 mark and improved to 7-4 on the season.Ayanna Swan paced the squad with 12 kills, followed by Luisa Schirmer with 11 daggers. Both earned spots on the All-Tournament Team for their efforts over the weekend.

Taylor Hughes was tight in the middle, handing out 36 assists. Hannah Gruensfelder added 18 digs and Ashley Wenz notched nine kills. Madison Smeathers posted seven kills and two blocks.

Set 1: The Buckeyes jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the opening frame to send the Flyers to their bench. Out of the break, Dayton responded with a 9-3 run to cut the deficit to one. Smeathers and Schirmer gave the home team some breathing room before Swan laid down the kill for a 25-22 winner.

Set 2: Ohio State gained control early and maintained that advantage throughout in a 25-18 triumph. Wenz tallied five kills on nine error-free attempts. As a team, the Buckeyes attacked .471 for the set, connecting for 15 kills with just a single error.

Set 3: The final stanza was a nail-biter that featured 12 ties and nine lead changes. Hughes fed the ball 13 times while Lauren Witte was a perfect 3-for-3 on kills. Wenz gave OSU the match-point opportunity before Schirmer put the nail in the coffin as the Buckeyes managed to get past Dayton in the 25-21 clincher.

Ohio State opens Big Ten action when it hosts Maryland on Wednesday (Sept. 20) at 7 p.m.

The University of Dayton volleyball team fell to 25th-ranked Ohio State, 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21), Saturday afternoon in the finale of the OSU Buckeye Invitational. Today’s match was played at Capital Center due to conflicting events on OSU’s campus. Junior Lauren Bruns led the team with a match-high 15 kills.

KEY STATS
– Senior Jane Emmenecker posted her second-consecutive and sixth double-double of the season with 35 assists and 10 digs
– Senior Amber Erhahon also reached the double-digit kills mark with 10 while senior Jessica Sloan was the team’s leading blocker (6)
– The two squads were even on the blocks with four apiece but Ohio State out-hit Dayton, .336 to .248
– The Buckeyes were led by Ayanna Swan with 12 kills and Hannah Greunsfelder with 18 digs

Dayton will begin Atlantic 10 Conference play this Friday with a road trip to St. Louis to take on the Saint Louis Billikens. First serve is set for 8 p.m. ET at SLU’s Chaifetz Pavilion.
