Russia 3, Egypt 0

Russia took just an hour and eight minutes to dispatch Egypt to move to 3-0 and solidify its spot atop Pool A. Russia crushed the Egyptians offensively, scoring nearly as many points on kills (49) as its foe managed in the match (51).

The Russians also had help from 10 blocks and six aces in the match, while Egypt tallied 20 kills, five blocks and two aces. The score appeared to be less than a blowout only because of 24 Russian miscues.

Angelina Lazarenko and Anna Kotikova paced the Russians double-digit point totals of 13 and 10 respectively. Each managed 10 kills, while Lazarenko chipped in two blocks and an ace. Seven Russian players posted at least five points in the match.

Nada Meawad put down eight points, with six kills, a block and an ace to lead Egypt. Noura Moawad added seven points, including four kills and two blocks.

Bulgaria 3, Mexico 2

Bulgaria served up 19 aces in an otherwise close match with Mexico on Sunday. The 12-point differential in aces (19-7) made up all but one of the 13-point spread in the match (110-97).

Mexico edged Bulgaria 45-44 in kills and 15-14 in blocks, but gave up three more points on miscues (33-30).

Emileta Racheva was responsible for seven of the Bulgarian’s 19 aces, while Aleksandra Milanova and Borislava Saykova added four apiece. Top scorer Monika Krasteva chipped in three perfect serves to go with her 13 kills and four blocks. Milanova added 17 points, including 12 kills, while Elena Becheva managed 16 points, including a team-best 14 putaways. Racheva posted three blocks and two kills in addition to her ace tally for 12 points total. Saykova put up a team-leading four blocks in addition to her serving prowess.
