Day one of the 2017 European Women’s Championships has concluded, with some easy and tough matches taking place.
In the most shocking news to begin the competition, Russia fired their head coach just hours before the team’s first serve of the competition. This did not deter their focus, though, as they took down the Ukraine in a grueling five-set match. The team is hungry for another medal at the competition, as the team’s captain, Ekaterina Pankova has already won two gold medals at the event, but is ready to obtain another.
One of the biggest comebacks on the day came from Belarus as they came back from 0-2 down to win in three. Belarus struggled early, losing the first two sets by scores of 25-10 and 25-15. The team made a remarkable turnaround to down Croatia.
Pool D of the competition began much the way it should have, with Serbia and the Netherlands topping their opponents. Both of these squads are favorites in the competition to make a deep run and even meet back up in the finals. Tijana Boskovic was the top scorer for the Serbians with 22 points, beginning where she left off at the 2017 World Grand Prix last month.
Day two will feature a large number of big matches that will test each team in their process to moving onto the playoff phase of the competition.
