Serbia Rallies from Down 2-0, Overcomes Miscues in Five-Set Win

Serbia def. Argentina 3-2 (20-25, 16-25, 25-20, 26-24, 17-15)

Peru def. Mexico 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 25-14)

Argentina outscored Serbia and had help from 44 errors, but the Serbians rallied for the five-set win to stay atop Pool G. Meanwhile, Peru grabbed its first win of the tournament, topping Mexico in four sets.

Serbia 3, Argentina 2

Serbia kept its hold on the top spot in Pool G, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to steal away a five-set win over Argentina.

The Argentines actually outscored Serbia 109-104, with help from 44 Serbian miscues. Serbia outdid its foes 53-48 in kills, 17-10 in blocks and 9-7 in aces to make up for their errors. Argentina committed just 25 errors in the match and played solid defensive, pulling up 121 digs in the contest.

Argentina’s Anahi Florencia Tosi was the top scorer in the match with 25 points, but it was not enough to earn her team the victory. Tosi tallied 20 kills, three blocks and two aces. Agostina Denisse Soria chipped in 17 points, with 16 kills and a block, while Agostina Sol Beltramino put up a team-leading four blocks.

Katarina Lazovic put down 17 kills, served up a team-best four aces and notched three blocks to pace Serbia. Four other players scored in double figures: Ljubica Milojevic (13), Jovana Kocic (12), Vanja Bukilic (12) and Katarina Jovic (11). Milojevic put up six blocks and six kills, while Kocic added four stuffs to her seven kills and an ace. Jovic managed 10 kills, while Bukilic registered eight kills, two blocks and two aces.

 

Peru 3, Mexico 1

Peru earned its first win of the competition, topping Mexico in four sets, while winning all scoring statistical categories.

The Peruvians outdid Mexico in kills (50-45), blocks (11-5), and aces (6-3), while earning six more points on errors (30-24). The Mexicans did post 116 digs to Peru’s 107.

Leslie Leyva led the victors with 19 points, including 15 kills, three aces and a block. Nicole Abreu Erquingo(15) and Maricarmen Guerrero (14) followed. Erquinigo tallied 15 kills, while Guerrero added eight kills, five blocks and an ace.

Uxue Amaya Guereca Parra, Karina Angelica Flores Gamez and Kathya Paulina Garcia Chavez chipped in double-digit point efforts for Mexico. Parra notched 13 points, all on kills, while Gamez added eight kills, four blocks and an ace. Chavez put down 11 points, all on kills.
