Kazakhstan appears to be in the driver’s seat to take Pool A after registering its second straight five-set win of the tournament, while powerhouses Iran, Japan, China and Australia also are 2-0.
Australia did have to work a bit harder than expected for its second victory, having to rally from down 2-0 for the 19-25, 26-28, 25-19, 25-14, 15-11 win over Thailand.
After two days of competition, Kazakhstan is all alone at 2-0 atop Pool A and faces 0-2 Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. China and Australia will battle for the top spot in Pool D on Wednesday, while Japan will take on South Korea for the No. 1 position in Pool C. Iran, which won the title in 2011 and 2013, faces Chinese Taipei in a battle of the unbeatens in Pool B.
Coming into the tournament, Japan and Australia were considered favorites after each earning a spot in the 2018 Men’s World Championships by claiming the top two positions at the Asian qualifier earlier this year. Japan also is the defending tournament champion, taking the title over Iran in 2015.
Pool A is made up of Indonesia, Qatar, Kazakhstan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Pool B consists of Iran, Chinese Taipei, Pakistan and Iraq. Japan headlines Pool C, which also includes Korea, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. Pool D features Australia, which qualified for the 2018 World Championships alongside Japan at the Asian qualifiers, China, Thailand and Hong Kong.
The top two teams in each pool will move on to the event quarterfinals.
