After announcing her transfer from Texas to Nebraska, All-Big 12 selection Lexi Sun has been in the spotlight for the Huskers, although she has yet to take the court due to injury.
After wearing street clothes for the team’s first three matches, the 6-2 sophomore outside hitter from Encinitas, California, warmed up and dressed for the Huskers’ matches with Ohio and Santa Clara last weekend.
“Just depends on how she progresses this week, we’re going to amp it up this week and see how she responds it’s one of those things where we need to keep pushing but we can’t go too much,” Cook said after opening weekend. “So that’s the delicate balance.”
Following the team’s three victories at the Ameritas Players Challenge at home in the Devaney Center, Cook shared that Sun was nearing a return to the court.
“We wanted to get her to go through a warm-up,” Cook told the Jeff Sheldon at HuskersHQ.com. “She went through a warm-up and hit. We’re just gradually upping it for her each day.”
Sun was dressed and on the sideline for the Huskers, but had to watch from the sidelines as Nebraska fell behind 2-0 and then rallied past Creighton in Omaha on Thursday.
Sun was the top ranked recruit nationally coming out of high school and was tabbed as the Gatorade National Player of the Year. She racked up 337 kills (3.27 per set), 115 digs (1.47 per set), 65 blocks (0.63 per set) and 18 aces as a rookie with the Longhorns en route to All-Big 12, All-Southwest Region and AVCA All-America honorable mention accolades.
The Huskers are set for just two matches this week, the road contest against in-state rival Creighton on Thursday and a Sunday afternoon ESPNU televised home match against Iowa State.
