Poland’s PlusLiga is one of the most respected domestic volleyball leagues in world. It’s quality is so respected that other leagues around the gloe want to imitate it. Needless to say, then, a spot on it is very valuable for up and coming teams. Such is the case for AGH Krakow, who is currently battling it out against Lechia Tomaszów in the Poland’s I League semifinals for a chance at a promotion. The team from Krakow lost their first game of the best of three series. Refereeing, which is currently under a lot of scrutiny all over the volleyball scenario, was the protagonist of the game, according to Krakow’s coach Andrzej Kubacki:
“These are matches for medals. My boys fought as much as they could. The MVP of this match was the ref, Mr. Głód, who distorted the outcome of the game. He made two controversial decisions at the end of the fourth set. We have a huge grudge to pick with him for this because he changed the decision of the line referees. Let me remind you, we are in Tomaszów, the line ref showed against the hosts, and he changed the decision. That is why he was the game’s MVP. I’m sorry that it happened, because my team was murdered.”
Kubacki’s words were very heavy, and the coach may even get a fine from the Polish volleyball federation. We just lament that at this level of competition, instant replay is not available, thus making the jobs of refs and coaches much harder.
