Bundesliga’s TV Rottenburg has announced in its official website the signing of former Pepperdine star Mitchel Penning. 23-year-old 6’8″ middle blocker is transferring out of Italy’s Sora, after a maiden pro season in which he saw very little court time.
With Pepperdine, Penning was a three-time MPSF All-Academic performer, boasting a career .381 hitting percentage. He was a member of Team USA’s roster at the 2014 FIVB U21 World Championship.
Here are Penning’s first words as a member of TV Rottenburg’s squad
“I like the German league, it has gotten better and better in the last few years. I’ve only heard good things about Rottenburg, the work of the coach is heavily praised. I too want to work hard here and get better every day. My fist impressions are very nice. I’m totally positive and happy about playing in Germany.”
The team’s coach, Hans Peter Müller-Angstenberger, was likewise very excited:
“Mitch has gained experience in Italy and learned a lot in his first year in Europe. We hope to bring his positive, American mentality to the team. Recent years have shown that we have had ver productive middle blockers and I am convinced that this will be the case again this year.”
At Rottenburg, Penning will find a team that had a horrible 2017/28 season, finishing Bundesliga second-to-last with a 1-19 record. Can they turn it around this year?
