Two American Pairs, Cuban Champs Advance in Xiamen Men’s Round of 16

Both USA duos advanced to the FIVB 3-Star Quarterfinals with wins on Saturday. Ryan Doherty and James Avery Drost defeated Australia’s Christopher McHugh and Damien Schumann in straight sets 21-18, 21-19. Sean Rosenthal and Trevor Crabb advanced after taking down Julio Cesar Do Nascimento Junior and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar 21-18, 21-16.

Italians Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo, currently ranked 12th in the FIVB World Beach rankings, advanced with a 21-16, 21-16 win over Switzerland’s Nico Beeler and Marco Krattiger.

Last week’s FIVB One-Star champions from Langkawi, Cuba’s Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez also are still in the running after downing Russia’s Nikita Liamin and Viacheslav Krasilnikov in straight sets (21-16, 21-17.

Seven countries are represented in the quarterfinals, with the United States boasting two remaining teams.

The quarterfinals will be played later on Saturday.
