The Brazilians could occupy two of the three podium spots as both remaining pairings advanced into the Xiamen 3-Star Women’s semifinals.

Maria Antonelli and Carol Horta downed Evgenia Ukolova and Anastasia Barsuk of Russia in straight sets 21-18, 24-22, while Barbara Seixas de Freitas and Fernanda Alves moved on after edging Americans Emily Day and Brittany Hochevar in an extended match. Day and Hochevar took the opening set 21-13, but could not hold off Barbara and Fernanda, falling 21-15, 15-13 in the final two stanzas.

“It’s Carol’s first semifinal on the World Tour, I’m very proud of her, how she’s playing, how I’m playing, our energy and so I’m excited,” said Maria.

The Brazilian duos, however, will face off in the semifinals at 10 p.m. ET.

In the other half of the bracket, China’s Fan Wang and Yuan Yue will take the semifinal stage in front of their home crowd after downing Joy Stubbe and Jolien Sinnema of the Netherlands 21-12, 14-21, 15-6 despite facing heavy rain midway through the match. The Chinese duo will face Victoria Bieneck and Isabel Schneider of Germany. The German pair topped Austria’s Stefanie Schwaiger and Katharina Schutzenhofer 21-17, 21-19.
