UCLA Moves Up to No. 2 in AVCA Rankings with Upset of BYU

A perfect 23-0 mark has Long Beach State hanging on to the No. 1 spot in the AVCA Top 15 poll, but UCLA’s upset of then No. 2 BYU shook up the remainder of the Top 5.

With the victory along with a sweep of Stanford on Wednesday, bumped the Bruins up three spots to No. 2 in this week’s rankings.

BYU, which clinched the MPSF title with a sweep of then No. 4 Pepperdine on Wednesday, dropped two spots to No. 4 in the poll.

No. 3 UC Irvine held strong at No. 3 with a pair of victories over No. 9 Cal State Northridge, besting the Matadors in five sets on Friday and picking up a road sweep on Saturday.

MIVA Champion Ohio State remained at No. 7 in the listings despite falling to then No. 12 Ball State on Saturday. The win did bump the Cardinals up a spot to No. 11.

UC Santa Barbara fell one spot to No. 12 with a pair of losses to No. 6 Hawaii (3-0, 3-1).

Ahead this week, No. 1 LSBU faces a road test with a pair of matches against No. 6 Hawaii. No. 3 UC Irvine is slated for a home and home series with No. 12 UC Santa Barbara.

The MPSF and MIVA kick off postseason tournaments this weekend.
