Brazil and Mexico Perfect; Puerto Rico Tops the USA at Pan Am Cup

Math Results – Pool A

  • Cuba def. Guatemala 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-16)
  • Cuba moves to 2-0 with 9 points; Guatemala falls to 0-2 with 0 points

Marlon Herrera led the way for Cuba with 18 points on 18 kills. David Miguel scored 10 points at the opposite position, but did not start in the third set. Livan Rodriguez, captain and middle blocker, scored 6 points despite not playing in the third set. Their other middle blocker, Raul Roamy, had 2 blocks on his way to 8 points on the night.

Carlos Santiago scored 8 points on 7 kills and 1 block as Guatemala’s leading scorer. Arnulfo Wagner scored 5 points on 5 kills on the outside. Guatemala finished the match with only 1 block and 1 ace as a team.

Match Results – Pool A

  • Mexico def. Chile 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-19)
  • Mexico is 2-0 with 10 points; Chile falls to 0-2 with 1 point

Jorge Barajas and Daniel Vargas both continued the tournament as leading scorers for Mexico. Vargas posted 11 on the night. Barajas put up 12 kills a service ace for 13 points. Perdo Rangel also scored 11 points as the setter on 6 kills, 4 blocks, and 1 ace.

Dusan Bonacic led the way for Chile with 15 points on 11 kills and for blocks from the left side. Vicente Parraguirre also scored in the double digits with 11 points on 8 kills, 2 blocks, and 1 ace.

Match Results – Pool B

  • Brazil def. Colombia 3-0 (27-21, 25-17, 25-12)
  • Brazil jumps to 1-0 with 10 points; Colombia falls to 0-2 with 1 point

Alan Souza scored 18 points to lead the way for Brazil again in their second consecutive sweep of the tournament.  Souza put away 12 kills, 3 aces, and 3 blocks. Nobre Dantas and Flavio Gualberto both scored 10 points on 8 kills. Dantas chipped in 2 aces, and Gualberto contributed 2 blocks.

Ivan Hurtado was the only player for Colombia to score more than 6 points. He finished with 11 points on 10 kills and 1 block.

Match Results – Pool B

  • Canada def. Dominican Republic 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-16)
  • Canada is now at 2-0 with 9 points; Dominican Republic is 0-2 with 0 points

Brandon Koppers and Blake Scheerhoorn were the top-producers for Canada in their sweep over the Dominican Republic, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively. They both put away 10 kills in the win.  Justin Duff produced 10 points in the middle on 8 kills and 2 blocks.

Henry Capellan was the only player for the Dominican Republic to score in the double-digits. He scored 10 points on 10 kills.

Match Results – Pool C

  • Puerto Rico def. the United States 3-1  (23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21)
  • United States falls to 1-1 with 6 points; Puerto Rico is 1-1 with 5 points

Mitch Stahl led the scoring for the United States with 12 points on 8 kills and 4 blocks. Kyle Russell had 11 points at the opposite position with 6 kills, 3 blocks, and 2 aces. Jake Arnitz also scored 11 points on 10 kills and 1 block. David Wieczorek finished with 10 points from 9 kills and 1 block.

Maurice Torres and Sequiel Sanchez both contributed 12 kills for Puerto Rico. Sancehez also put in a block and an ace to score 14 points. Torres added an ace to finish with 13. Steven Morales finished with 11 points in the middle on 9 kills and 2 aces.

Match Results – Pool C

  • Argentina def. Puerto Rico 3-1 (20-25, 25-15, 33-31, 25-17)
  • Argentina is 1-0 with 4 points, Puerto Rico is 0-1 with 1 point

German Johansen was the only player for Argentina who reached double-digit points in the sweep of Peru. He scored 10 points on 10 kills. Alejandro Toro and Nicolas Zebra both chipped in 7 points.

Alvaro Hidalgo led the match with 13 points for Peru. He finished with 10 kills, 2 blocks, and 1 ace. Eduardo Dammert was right behind him with 8 points on 8 kills.
