The defending champions of the women’s World Grand Champions Cup, Brazil, will open their 2017 campaign with Russia in Tokyo. The Brazilians are coming off a strong win at the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix and are looking to keep that momentum rolling against Russia.
This will be the first time that the two teams will have met since the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, where Brazil took down Russia in straight sets. At the World Grand Champions Cup, this will be the fourth time that the two teams meet, with the most recent at the last one in 2013.
Russia won the 1997 edition of the tournament, where they won all five matches. This was, also, the only time that Russia won their opening match at the World Grand Champions Cup.
Brazil is competing in their sixth World Grand Champions Cup, missing only the inaugural edition in 1993. Brazil has come out at the most decorated team in the competition with two gold medals, one silver and one bronze. The Brazilian squad will look to utilize Tandara Caixeta and Natalia Pereira who were instrumental in the Brazilian Grand Prix title.
