Wichita State has hired Austin Hosto as its new assistant to fill the spot vacated by a series of moves made with the coaching staff in May. Former assistant Donnie Wallace left the program to pursue a career in private business, while Sean Carter was promoted to associate head coach.

Hosto comes to the program after spending the spring as an assistant coach with the Arizona Men’s Volleyball Club team and as a volunteer assistant with Arizona’s varsity women’s beach volleyball team last season. In his role with the beach team, he contributed to on-court coaching as well as scouting of opponents and game plan development for specific teams. He also collaborated with the coaching staff to develop team compositions and pairings for a top-9 ranked team in NCAA Division I.

Even in his limited time and role with Arizona, he did enough to impress both Arizona varsity head coaches.

“I’m excited about and for Austin,” Lamb said. “He comes highly recommended by two people I trust in Arizona volleyball coach David Rubio and Arizona beach volleyball coach Steve Walker. He is a hard worker with high energy and is always teaching. His beach background excites me. Youth sand volleyball is exploding in Wichita and he’s a great asset for the sand community.”

Wichita State doesn’t currently sponsor beach volleyball as a varsity sport, but the sport is the fastest-growing in the NCAA. They were ranked 9th in the country in the final AVCA coaches’ poll, and were one of the ‘first teams out’ of an invite to the NCAA tournament.

Arizona State’s beach team finished 2017 with a 17-10 record,
