Brazilian volleyball is undergoing yet another corruption scandal. This time, the president of a state federation, Carlos Cimino (Brazil is made up of 26 states plus one federal district), is accusing the president of the national federation (CBV), Walter Laranjeiros, of using free airplane tickets from GOL, an airline company that sponsors the institution, for personal use. In his accusation, Cimino also asked the institution for fiscal documents related to accounting transparency and an end to its abusive fees and charges.
Radamés Lattari, CBV’s director, replied to Cimino stating that he would not be able to answer all his demands regarding accounting transparency because the institution is shorthanded and undergoing an internal audit. In his message, he stated that CBV would be penalized by the auditing process, “in despite of the president’s pleas for leniency.” In a few days later, however, CBV sent Cimino all the information requested.
Things took a huge turn for the worse, however, a few days later, as Brazilian blogger Bruno Voloch, who had made the accusations public, denounced Cimino himself of the same crime he was accusing Laranjeiros. He published in his blog a phone message that Cimino sent him himself, confirming that both him and a representative from CBV met personally to sort everything out behind the curtains. Cimino had made the trip using free tickets from the airplane company. Later posts from Voloch accused Laranjeiros of authoritarian conduct against Cimino.
All CBV sponsors released notes stating that they support an official investigation on the matter.

Sadly, corruption scandals in Brazilian sport were plenty. Most notably, the country’s Olympic Committee was suspended by the IOC when its head, Carlos Nuzman, was arrested as part of an investigation into an alleged cash-for-votes system connected to Rio de Janeiro’s bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics. In addition, on news not related to volleyball, but equally important for readers to understand the current state of corruption in Brazilian sports, in 2017 the country’s Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF) indicted the former president of the Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA), Coaracy Nunes, and three other directors for forming a criminal organization that diverted money from Brazilian water sports.
