#1 seeded Larissa Franca and Talita Antunes of Brazil take down Switzerland’s Anouk Verge-Depre/Joana Heidrich in straight sets 2-0, (21-19, 21-16). With the win, the top Brazilian team will move on to the quarterfinals of the 2017 Vienna Beach World Championships while Verge-Depre/Hedrich are eliminated, finishing in 9th place.
The last time the two teams met, the Swiss duo took the match in The Hague.
The Brazilian’s forced the serve to Verge-Depre throughout the match, forcing her to hit the ball. Verge-Depre made a number of errors because of this, with 11 overall in the match. She missed balls off the left and right sidelines as well as off the back line, though being aggressive all the while. Her strong shots were to the right of the block when they fell within the lines. Heidrich found more success to the left of the block while hitting the ball deep on the right.
The Swiss served at Antunes for the majority of the match. She was efficient on the attack going right or left of the block for a sharp, short angle shot. Franca found her success this way as well, but deeper than Antunes put the ball, giving the hits to the Swiss a nice change that threw them off.
“This is a tournament where it’s vital to be mentally strong at all times because this is the only way you can play at your best. We need to keep doing what we’ve been doing. We are making the right decisions and that’s the way to go,” said Franca.
The Swiss pair had opportunities to take the lead in the second set to force a third set, but they were unable to mentally stay in the set.
The Brazilian’s will take on fellow countrywomen, Maria Antonelli/Carolina Salgado in the quarterfinals.
