#17 San Diego Sweeps Pacific to Win 9th Straight

The #17 San Diego Toreros defeated the Pacific Tigers in straight sets to record their ninth consecutive victory and 15th sweep of the season.

The Toreros were led offensively by senior opposite Jayden Kennedy, who notched 15 kills while hitting at a blistering .522 clip. Other key offensive contributions came from junior outside Lauren Fuller (12 kills), freshman outside Roxie Wiblin (7 kills) and junior middle Kaity Edwards (7 kills). Senior setter Kristen Gengenbacher paced the offense with 36 assists.

For the Tigers, junior outside Andie Shelton recorded a team-high nine kills, and freshman setter Hanne De Schrijver tallied 17 assists. Senior libero Katrin Gotterba anchored Pacific’s back-row defense with a team-high 13 digs.

The home team led throughout in the first set, winning the frame 25-21 on a Kennedy kill. The second was all San Diego and the Toreros went into the break with a 25-12 victory and 2-o match advantage. In the third frame, Pacific closed to within 20-17, but San Diego held off the late surge and sealed the match with a 25-20 victory.

Next up, San Diego travels to Oregon for a Thursday match against Portland, while Pacific hosts St. Mary’s on Saturday.

Toreros Dominate Pacific

San Diego wins ninth straight match, 15th sweep this season

SAN DIEGO – Jayden Kennedy registered 15 kills and hit .522 to lead San Diego to a dominating 3-0 victory against Pacific on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Kennedy led an efficient and balanced Toreros (19-4, 12-1 WCC) attack that hit .337 on the day with seven players registering at least one kill.

It is USD’s ninth straight victory and 15th sweep of the season. The Toreros have won 25-of-28 sets during the winning streak.

Lauren Fuller had a big day, racking up 12 kills, six digs and a block. Roxie Wiblin and Kaity Edwards chipped in seven kills apiece. Kristen Gengenbacher set USD up for success with a team-high 36 assists.

Lizzy Tardieu hit double-digits in digs for the 20th time in 23 matches this season, contributing a team-best 11. Merve Tanyel added seven digs and three kills to the effort.

The Tigers (12-13, 7-8 WCC) scored the first point of the day but that was the only lead Pacific would hold all match. USD came out swinging and jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set.

Fuller caught fire early and went 6-for-6 on kills to pace the offensive effort. The Tigers rallied toward the end of the first set to cut the Toreros lead to 24-21 but Kennedy finished the set with a kill to put the Toreros up, 1-0.

It was more of the same for USD in the second set as the Toreros jumped out to a 7-1 advantage. USD led by at least three points throughout the remainder of the set and closed it out on an 8-2 run. The Toreros won the set, 25-12, and took a 2-0 lead into the break.

The intermission did not cool off USD as the Toreros returned to the court and reeled off a 5-0 run to start the third set and forced a timeout by Pacific.

The Tigers closed its deficit to 11-8 and 20-17 but that was as close as Pacific would get. Kaity Edwards hammered her seventh kill of the day to secure a 25-20 third-set victory and a 3-0 sweep for the Toreros.

USD will look to continue its momentum next weekend when it travels to Portland and Gonzaga.

Pacific Finishes Road Trip With 3-0 Loss at #13 San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pacific women’s volleyball team wrapped up weekend play and its final road trip of the 2017 season with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-20) loss to No. 13 San Diego at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

It was a tough day for the Tigers (12-13, 7-7 WCC) as they were held to a .106 hitting percentage as a team and totaled just 28 kills on the day. Leading the Tigers’ efforts was Andie Shelton with a team-best nine kills. Emily Baptista was held to single-digit kills for the first time in nearly a month. Baptista totaled seven kills, while Kaitlyn Lines totaled six kills. Commanding the offense was Hanne De Schrijver as she dished out 17 assists.

Janie Feldsher hit a team-best .429 with four kills and just one error in seven swings.

Defensively, libero Katrin Gotterba led the Tigers with 13 digs, while Shelton tallied six digs.

Pacific was solid at the net, with San Diego only out-blocking the Tigers, 8-5. Feldsher and Shelton led with two block assists apiece, while Lines also had two blocks (one assisted, one solo). Ashlyn Fleming assisted on one block and Alex Holt had one solo block.

Pacific returns home for its final four matches, beginning with its match against Saint Mary’s on Saturday, November 11. That day will also serve as the Tigers’ Military Appreciation Day which will include free admission for all active and retired military personnel.
