234 Athletes Set To Try Out For Women’s National Team

  0 Carly DeMarque | February 23rd, 2018 | College - Women's Indoor, International Volleyball, News, U.S. Women's Volleyball

This year’s U.S. Women’s National Team Open Tryout will feature 234 athletes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from March 2-4. The tryout will be used to evaluate players for the U.S. Senior National Team and the U.S. Collegiate National Team.

The tryout will be led by U.S. Women’s National Team head coach, Karch Kiraly. All sessions at the event (minus the USA training session on Sunday morning) will be streamed live and is available for free here.

In total, there will be 89 colleges from around the country represented at the tryout. A breakdown of the participants by position:

  • 62 outside hitters
  • 50 middle blockers
  • 48 liberos
  • 43 setters
  • 31 opposites

Selected athletes for the U.S. Women’s National Team may begin their training in Anaheim, California as early as the spring of 2018 or when the athletes scholastic or professional club season has ended. Additionally, there are three U.S. Collegiate National Team programs that a player can be selected to:

  • U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team – May 20-31, CNT Asia (International)
  • U.S. Women’s Collegiate National Team – July 4-15, CNT Europe (International)
  • U.S. Women’s Collegiate National team – June 22-July 1 CNT-Detroit, Michigan (Domestic)

The teams will be selected by the end of March.

A number of top players from around the country have been selected to join USA Volleyball for the tryouts. In the past, many future Olympians or National Team members were selected from the tryout, including Kim Hill, Rachael Adams, Kelly Murphy and Carli Lloyd.

Minnesota leads the nation with the number of participants in the tryouts with 14 athletes that includes Stephanie Samedy, Alexis Hart and Samantha Seliger-Swenson. Wisconsin is also sending a strong lineup to the tryouts – Sydney Hilley, Tionna Williams and Dana Rettke. Surprisingly, Nebraska and Texas have no representatives at the tryouts.
