3 Russians, Americans, Brazilians Highlight Yangzhou Men’s Round of 16

The men’s pool winners were crowned on Thursday. The rest of the elimination field was formed on Friday with three teams winning in tiebreak.

Top seeded Ahmed Tijan/Cherif Younousse of Qatar bounced back after dropping their tournament opener, topping Italy’s Marco Caminati/Enrico Rossi 26-24, 18-21, 15-8 to remain in the competition.

Australia’s Cole Durant/Damien Schumann and Thailand’s Nuttanon Inkiew/Sedtawat Padsawud also went the distance to move on.

After pool play wrapped up, the remainder of the Round of 16 field was decided.

Tijan/Younousse again were pushed to the brink, this time hanging on for a 21-19, 16-21, 15-10 win over China’s Peng Gao/Likejiang Ha.

  • #18 Stafford Slick/Casey Patterson (USA)

  • #6 Martins Plavins/Edgars Tocs (Latvia)
  • #29 Taras Myskiv/Valeriy Samoday (Russia)
  • #26 Jakub Szalankiewicz/Maciej Rudol (Poland)

Myskiv/Samoday ousted third-seeded countrymen Nikita Liamin/Igor Velichko 21-16, 21-17.

Evans/Kolinske moved on as Ukraine’s Sergiy Popov/Iaroslav Gordieiev withdrew due to injury, while Slick/Patterson topped Nuttanon/Sedtawat 22-20, 21-11.

The round of 16 field includes three Brazilian teams, three Americans and three Russians.

Top seeded Ahmed Tijan/Cherif are set to play 11th-seeded Canadians Sam Pedlow/Sam Schachter.

The lone top 10 matchup features ninth-seeded Czech pair Ondrej Perusic/David Schweiner against sixth-seeded Latvians Plavins/Tocs.

Men’s Round 2 action is set to begin at 9 p.m. ET Friday.
