After two rounds of qualification, eight men’s and eight women’s teams are through to the Main Draw at the Huntington Beach Open. Highlighting the group of qualifiers are three American men’s duos and six American women’s pairs.
The 16 qualifiers along with the 32 other teams in the main draw will now competed in a double-elimination competition beginning Tuesday morning.
Among those moving on were Arizona alumna McKenna Thibodeau and Madison Witt, who started in Tuesday’s country quota and made it through three matches to the main draw.
Other Americans advancing were Falyn Fonoimoana/Alexa Strange, Katie Jameson/Tracy Jones, Briana Hinga/Bre Moreland, Avery Bush/Christina Matthew and Summer Nash/Megan Wheeler. Aline Chamereau/Leazana Placette of France and Agnieszka Pregowska/Aleksandra Wachowicz (Poland) rounded out the group.
Jameson/Jones and Fanoimoana/Strange advanced in three-set affairs, with the latter rebounding after dropping the opening stanza.
With the six American qualifiers, there are now 22 women’s teams representing the USA in the main draw. Teams from Brazil (4), Canada (3), Columbia, the Czech Republic (2), Finland (2), France (2), Germany (3), Japan, Poland (2), Romania, Russia, Spain (2), Switzerland (2) round out the field.
On the men’s side, top qualifiers included three Brazilian duos: Vitor Felipe/Guto Carvalhaes, Saymon Barbosa/Alvaro Filho and Oscar Brandao/Ricardo Santos. Two Canadian pairs: Aaron Nusbaum/Michael Plantinga and Sergiy Garbovskyy/Fiodar Kazhamiaka also advanced along with the three American pairings. Upping the American contingent to 19 men’s teams were: David Vander Meer/Logan Webb, Jonathan Drake/Chris Luers and Kacey Losik/Garrett Wilson.
In addition the Americans, six Brazilian teams, as well as pairs from Argentina, Austria, Canada (4), France, Germany (2), Italy, Japan, Latvia (2), Mexico, Netherlands (2), Norway, Poland (2), Russia (3), Spain make up the main draw field.
Four of the eight second round qualifying matches went the distance.
