#7 BYU Sweeps Portland, Extends Home Streak Against WCC Foes

MATCH NOTES

The #7 BYU Cougars continued their dominance at home over West Coast Conference opponents, defeating the Portland Pilots in straight sets. The Cougars have not lost a WCC match at the Smith Fieldhouse since 2011.

The BYU offense was paced by junior setter Lyndie Haddock, who dished out 36 assists. Junior outside Veronica Jones-Perry notched 16 kills, hitting a .538 clip, while sophomore outside McKenna Miller added 12. Senior middle Cosy Burnett registered seven blocks and sophomore libero Mary Lake had 19 digs.

“I’m really impressed with how well we passed the ball tonight,” BYU head coach Heather Olmstead said. “It made it easy for Lyndie (Haddock) to distribute the ball, which she did a great job of. We were really dialed in offensively and defensively. I am really proud of the team’s effort tonight.”

For the Pilots, senior outside Hannah Troutman led the Pilots with 12 kills and sophomore setter Cali Thompson had 25 assists.

In the first set, BYU used a six-point run to build a nine-point lead in the middle of the frame and won 25-15 on a kill by freshman middle Kennedy Redding. The second was all Cougars as they went on several long runs and won 25-10 on a Burnett ace. The third frame was more of the same, with set and match ending on a kill from freshman opposite Sara Hamson.

The Pilots will next take on No.18 San Diego on Saturday at 12 p.m., in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

BYU SWEEPS PORTLAND BEHIND TEAM EFFORT

PROVO, Utah ­– No. 7 BYU women’s volleyball swept Portland (25-15, 25-10, 25-14) behind a team effort Thursday night at the Smith Fieldhouse to remain perfect in West Coast Conference play.

“I’m really impressed with how well we passed the ball tonight,” BYU head coach Heather Olmstead said. “It made it easy for Lyndie (Haddock) to distribute the ball, which she did a great job of. We were really dialed in offensively and defensively. I am really proud of the team’s effort tonight.”

Veronica Jones-Perry led the Cougars with 16 kills followed by McKenna Miller with 12. Cosy Burnett had seven kills on a .875 clip to go with seven blocks. Lyndie Haddock earned 36 assists while Mary Lake added 19 digs in the win.

The Cougars (18-1, 7-0 WCC) started out the first set with a back-and-forth battle with the Pilots (13-6, 4-3 WCC). But, late in the set BYU scored six straight to distance itself from Portland at 19-12. Another five-point rally and a kill from Kennedy Redding sealed the first set win for the Cougars, 25-15.

BYU started out the second set strong with a block from Burnett and Haddock, helping the Cougars go up 6-2, forcing a Portland timeout. BYU then went on an 11-1 run, fueled by Pilot errors, making the score 19-7. BYU scored six of the last eight points, winning the set 25-10 on a Burnett service ace.

The Cougars kept the momentum going in the third set, starting with a service ace from Lake. Back-to-back kills from Jones-Perry extended the lead to four, 10-6. A 6-1 rally, helped by four Portland errors, put BYU up by double digits, 19-9. With a kill from Sara Hamson, the Cougars secured the win against the Pilots.

BYU returns to the Smith Fieldhouse Saturday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. MDT, for its next match against Gonzaga. The match will be streamed live on TheW.tv with live stats found on the BYU women’s volleyball schedule page.

No.7 BYU Maintains Home Win Streak with Three Set Victory Over The Pilots

PROVO, Utah. — The Portland Pilots Volleyball team battled No.7 BYU in the Smith Fieldhouse, Thursday night in a West Coast Conference match.  The Cougars maintained their WCC home win streak with sweep over the Pilots with set scores of 25-15, 25-10, and 25-14. BYU has not been defeated at the Smith Fieldhouse during WCC play since 2011

The Pilots (13-6, 5-5) fought evenly with BYU (18-1, 7-0) to start the first set, reaming at 10-10 before the Cougars produced a short run headed by kills from junior Veronica Jones-Perry. Senior Sarah Savoca attempted to slow down the Cougar momentum with a kill and an ace, but BYU continued to push forward to a 20-13 lead off of kills from Jones-Perry, senior Cosy Burnett, and sophomore McKenna Miller. The Cougars then finalized the set moments later with another run to win 25-15.

BYU jumped ahead in the second set to a 6-2 lead before senior Hannah Troutman and sophomore Katie Barker each recorded kills to try and keep the Cougars close. BYU kept their momentum and surged ahead with an 11-1 run to bring them within the final points of the set. Junior Reghan Pukis and Barker put together two more kills to break up the BYU points, but the Cougars secured the set 25-10.

The Cougars again sprung forward in the third set 4-1, before Pukis and Troutman put together three kills to break up the BYU energy. The Cougars put together two more short runs to enter the final points of the set, but the Pilots answered with a 5-1 run in attempt to hold off BYU from securing set point. The Cougars then put together two more kills and a block to end the set 25-14 and complete the sweep.

Troutman led the Pilots with 12 kills and sophomore Cali Thompson had 25 assists.

The Pilots will next take on No.18 San Diego on Saturday at 12 p.m., in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
