CONFERENCE RECAP

Sunday’s slate of Big Ten action saw the home teams go 2-1. Both #6 Wisconsin and #23 Purdue won at home with sweeps over #25 Iowa and Ohio State. Indiana was the lone home team to fall as the Hoosiers were swept by Maryland.

  • Outside hitter Erika Pritchard was the star for the Terrapins, as she finished with a match-high 20 kills. Middle blocker Rainelle Jones also chipped in 9 kills for Maryland.
  • The Hoosiers were led by outside hitter Kamryn Malloy, who tallied 9 kills and 12 digs.
  • Maryland held the advantage in kills (48-36) and hitting percentage (.306-.144).

HOW IT HAPPENED

The two teams went back and forth in the opening set, exchanging the lead several times. But it was Maryland that surged ahead with a 6-0 spurt to grab a 22-16 lead late. The Hoosiers responded with a 4-1 run, but the Terrapins took the set, 25-21.

In the second set, Indiana jumped out in front early, with a 6-2 lead. Maryland then rallied with a 4-0 run to tie the set at 6 apiece. Indiana would have its chances as it controlled most of the set. But every time the Hoosiers built a lead, Maryland would respond, including taking the final two points of the set to collect a 25-23 win.

Maryland opened strong and cruised to the finish line in the third set. The Terrapins built a 7-2 advantage early and then used a 6-0 run to go ahead 15-6. Maryland then closed out Indiana with one final kill for a 25-16 victory.

#23 PURDUE DEF. OHIO STATE 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-13)

  • Purdue moves to 17-4 (6-4 Big Ten); Ohio State dips to 12-10 (3-7 Big Ten)

  • The Boilermakers got a balanced attack from their offense against the Buckeyes. Outside hitter Sherridan Atkinson led the way with 10 kills (.476) while middle blockers, Blake Mohler (.400) and Grace Cleveland (.333) each added 8 kills.
  • Ohio State got 8 kills apiece from outside hitter Bia Franklin and middle blocker Lauren Witte.
  • Purdue held a huge advantage at the net. The Boilermakers out-blocked the Buckeyes (14-4). Purdue hit .386 for the match and held Ohio State to just .082.

#7 WISCONSIN DEF. #25 IOWA 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-21)

  • Wisconsin improves to 14-4 (7-3 Big Ten); Iowa falls to 12-9 (4-6 Big Ten)

  • The Badgers had three finish in double figures in kills. Middle blocker Dana Rettke led the way with 17 kills, outside hitter Grace Loberg registered 11, and outside hitter Madison Duello chipped in 10. Loberg finished with a double-double, as she contributed 11 kills as well.
  • Right side hitter Reghan Coyle led the way with 10 kills for Iowa. Defensive specialist Emily Buschman tallied a match-high 14 digs for the Hawkeyes.
  • Setter Brie Orr notched her 2,000 career assist and finished with 27 on the day.
  • Wisconsin was efficient on the offensive end. The Badgers hit .405 and committed just 8 attack errors. Iowa made 15 attack errors, but hit just .170 for the match.
  • The Hawkeyes have now dropped three straight matches since upsetting Wisconsin on Oct. 6.
