#8 Lewis Takes Down Lindenwood 3-0 At Home

Lewis University managed to take down Lindenwood in three straight sets this past Saturday in order to improve their overall record to 8-2 and conference record to 3-1 as Lindenwood remains without a win this season.

In the first set the game was close in terms of score, however Lewis’ offense secured the victory for them. With a .541 hit percentage and 23 kills they managed to better Lindenwood, who also hit well with a .464, 28-26. In the next set, Lindenwood struggled with a low hit percentage of 0.69. Lewis wasn’t as dominant as in the first set, however still managed a 25-19 win.

Over the last set the hit percentages between the two teams were close, however Lewis managed to claim the win with another decisive victory. With a final score of 25-20 in the final set, Lewis solidified the sweep and won the match.

Both Ryan Coenen and Mitch Perinar on Lewis had 14 kills each. Koppel Blake managed 12 kills for Lindenwood.

The Lindenwood men’s volleyball team suffered a tough first-set loss Saturday night at No. 8 Lewis in Romeoville, Ill., which would lead to a 3-0 defeat to end the final of nine-consecutive road matches.

After attacking a .464 clip in the first frame in a 28-26 losing effort, the Lions only totaled 21 kills between the next two sets to lose 19-25 and 20-25, respectively. Head coach Kris Dorn was enthusiastic about his team’s performance in the first set.

“If we had played our previous matches with tonight’s mindset and focus, we would see dramatically different results,” Dorn said.

Blake Koppel recorded 12 kills on the night, after tallying 10 Friday evening at No. 10 Loyola. The senior hit .250, while also having three digs and one service ace.

Sam Schindler (.417) was second on the team with seven kills, while Nathan Van Dellen had six. MIchael Chard and Jake Duckworth each had four kills, while they combined for three digs.

Joseph Mayer recorded his third 30-assist match of the season, and second straight, with 31 dimes on the team’s 35 kills. Adam Brewster contributed three assists on the night. Junior libero Ryan Vorderer had double-digit digs for the second time in three matches with 11 tonight, the second most this season. The team had three blocks, including two of the solo variety by Rob Chatterton.

“We got better over the weekend,” Dorn continued. “We will continue to strive. With some hard work, we will continue to sharpen our ability to transition defense into earned points.”

The loss sends Lindenwood to 0-6 in MIVA action, and 0-9 overall to begin the 2017 season. After playing nine-consecutive road matches, the Lions will host Missouri Baptist at Hyland Arena on February 9 at 8 p.m. Missouri Baptist is currently ranked No. 4 nationally in NAIA.

Lewis University redshirt sophomore opposite hitter Mitch Perinar (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) and redshirt freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen (Franklin, Wis./Franklin) each had 14 kills as the No. 8 Flyer men’s volleyball team picked up the 28-26, 25-19, 25-20 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association sweep over Lindenwood at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Feb. 4).

The duo combined for a hitting percentage of .451 (28 kills, 5 errors, 51 attacks). Perinar had a hitting percentage of .444 (14-2-27), while Coenen connected at a rate of .458 (14-3-24).

With the win, Lewis improves to 8-2 on the season and 3-1 in MIVA action, while the Lions fall to 0-9 on the campaign and 0-6 in conference play.

Lewis sophomore setter Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) had a match-high 32 assists, alongside six digs, while redshirt sophomore libero Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) finished with a team-best nine digs and added seven assists.

As a team, Lewis finished with a .355 hitting percentage (45-12-93), while Lindenwood hit .244 (35-14-86).

Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 9), as they head to Columbus, Ohio with a 7 PM ET first serve against No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Ohio State.
