Four of the Top 12 seeds are out after Round of 32 clashes with other top ranked teams.
No. 3 Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda “Duda” Lisboa fell to No. 6 Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova of the Czech Republic in a very close 21-16, 19-21, 16-14 decision.
A balanced attach by the Czechs, with 20 kills by Slukova and 14 by Hermannova, and five aces, including four by Slukova, helped lift the team to victory. The Brazilians also gave up 16 points on errors.
No. 7 Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Canada edged No. 8 seed Barbara Seixas and Fernanda Alves of Brazil 21-16, 21-10 to knock out the 2015 World Championship medallists. Pavan racked up six blocks in the match, while also splitting kills with Humana-Paredes, tallying 13 and 14 respectively. The match was clean on both sides with just four errors apiece.
“(It was a) tough matchup because they are a great team,” Barbara said. “I am disappointed of course because we prepared hard and couldn’t do better. We are a new team and we are focusing on difficult moments because this is how you learn. We have a long way to go.”
Other Top 12 teams ousted were No .11 Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy of Australia and No. 12 Stefanie Schwaiger and Katharina Schutzenhofer of Switzerland.

Brazil’s Elize Maia and Taiana Lima continued to blaze their way through the World Championships field, moving on to the Round of 16 with a three-set win over Valentyna Davidova/Ievgeniia Shchypkova of the Ukraine. The victory sets up a battle between the pair and countrywomen Maria Antonelli/Carol Salgado, the event’s No. 9 seed, in the next round. It will be their second match against fellow Brazilians in the tournament. The duo edged Barbara/Fernanda in the opening round of Pool H, winning 10-21, 21-16, 17-15, before going on to win the group.
Wednesday’s results set up a Top 12 matchup between Pavan/Humana-Paredes and No. 10 seed Nina Betschart and Tanja Huberli of Austria. The remaining six Top 12 teams will face lower ranked foes.
Three Brazilian teams and three American teams: Summer/Sweat, Sarah Hughes/Kelly Claes and April Ross/Lauren Fendrick advanced to the Round of 16. Ross/Fendrick took out fellow Americans Emily Day/Nicole Branaugh by rallying for a three-setter win, 10-21, 21-18, 15-11.
