It was a big week in the Top 25 as conference play shook up the rankings and brought some major upsets with postseason implications. If Week 1 of league action is any indication, fans are in for a roller coaster ride in 2017. Ten matches went five sets, with three resulting in upsets.
Michigan State (RV) was the giant killer of the week, knocking off No. 4 Wisconsin on Friday and No. 3 Minnesota on Sunday, marking the first time in school history the Spartans had beaten back to back Top 5 foes. The latter also snapped the Gophers’ 40-match home win streak.
No. 14 Nebraska also posted a historical win, sweeping No. 2 Penn State in Happy Valley on Friday in the schools’ lone meeting of the season.
Ohio State knocked off vote-getter Maryland in a sweep and No. 12 Purdue in four sets.
No. 18 USC downed No. 15 UCLA in five Wednesday night. UCLA in turn topped No. 8 Oregon in four on Friday.
Louisville edged vote-getter Notre Dame in five.
