Mexico def. Trinidad & Tobago 3-2 (25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 22-25, 15-9)
Costa Rica def. Dominica 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-13)
Although both teams had already punched their tickets to the 2018 World Championships, the battle for supremacy in Group A went the distance with Mexico surviving for the five-set win.
Costa Rica finished third in the group, besting Dominica via sweep for its first win of the tournament on Sunday.
Mexico 3, Trinidad & Tobago 2
A 13-8 edge in blocking helped lift the Mexicans to the victory as the other statistics were fairly even. T&T boasted a 6-5 lead in aces. The teams tied in kills with 55 apiece, but Mexico made less errors (37-33).
Channon Thompson scored a match-high 24 points for Trinidad & Tobago with 20 kills, two blocks and two aces, but it was not enough to lift the home side to victory. Darlene Ramdin (15), Krystle Esdelle (12) and Sinead Jack (12) also posted double-digit efforts. Ramdin notched 15 kills, while Esdelle added 10 putaways. Jack managed six kills, a team-best four blocks and two aces.
For the victors, Samantha Bricio led the way with 23 points, 19 kills, a match-high three aces and a block. Dulce Carranza (19) and Xitlali Herrera (18) followed. Carranza turned in 14 kills, four blocks and an ace, while Herrera notched 11 kills and a match-high seven blocks.
Costa Rica 3, Dominica 0
Costa Rica nearly doubled Dominica’s efforts in every statistical category en route to the sweep.
The Costa Ricans bested Dominica 33-17 in kills, 5-1 in blocks and 10-2 in aces. The 40 points scored by Dominica, however, was the nation’s best tally of the tournament, with 20 coming from Costa Rica miscues.
Mijal Hines Cuza and Paola Ramirez posted double-digit point tallies to pace the victors, notching 12 and 10 points respectively. Ramirez downed 10 kills, while Hines added nine kills and a match-high three blocks. Johanna Gamboa tallied nine points, including a team-leading five aces.
Lorraine Lockhart scored six points, all on kills, to lead Dominica. Lisa James added four points, all on kills, while Shari Pascal and Tarmica Cabey chipped in three points each.
