MUNCIE, Ind. – Freshman outside hitter Jaylen Jasper was the key to No. 18 Stanford earning its first victory of 2018. The rookie downed 17 kills, nearly half of the Cardinal’s 40, while also accounting for three of the team’s five aces.
It was not Jasper’s first team-leading effort as he also paced the Cardinal against Princeton (20 kills, .275, 8 digs) and UC Santa Barbara (8 kills, .400).
Sophomore outside Eric Beatty was next on the team with five putaways. Redshirt senior middle Kevin Rakestraw led the way at the net with five stuffs. Sophomore setter Paul Bischoff posted a 30-assist, 10-dig double-double in just his second match of the season after returning from injury.
Stanford outhit the homestanding Cardinals .245 to .066, despite being outblocked 11-8. The Cardinal outdid BSU 5-2 in aces and notched 13 more kills (40-27) en route to the victory.
Sophomore outside Blake Reardon was tops among Ball State players with seven kills, while senior outside Mitch Weiler and sophomore outside Matt Szews followed with five apiece. Eight players tallied kills in the match with six notching two or more. Senior middle Anthony Lebryk put up a match-high six blocks, while Weiler pulled up nine digs.
Ball State rallied from down 9-6 to take a 12-11 lead in the opening set thanks to two Weiler kills and a block and an ace by Matt Walsh. Down 14-12, Stanford grabbed the lead with a 4-0 run as Jasper pounded down two kills and Presho notched a kill and a block. Ball State tied things up three times, last at 22, but couldn’t stop a final 3-0 Cardinal run.
Stanford led Set 2 from start to finish save a pair of early ties at 2-all and 3-all. The Cardinal turned a 7-6 lead into a 13-8 advantage with two Jasper kills as well as a Kyler Presho ace. Ball State called timeout, but could not slow Stanford, which responded with a 5-1 run out of the break. Two kills, a block and an ace by Leo Henken aided the effort. The Cardinal called timeout up six at 18-12 and quickly closed out the set with a 7-1 run. Three BSU miscues and a kill and a block by Beatty wrapped up the win.
Ball State kept pace with Stanford through the midway point of Set 3, trailing by just one at 12-11 after a 3-0 run. The Cardinal answered with a 3-0 run of its own to make it 15-11, scoring on a kill and two aces by Jasper. Up just three at 17-14, Stanford put together a 4-1 run, including kills by Bischoff, Jasper and Presho. Ball State scored four of the next six to narrow the gap to four at 23-19, with help from three Cardinal miscues. A Jasper putaway put Stanford on the hill at 24-19. A service error kept the match going, but a Henken kill closed out the sweep.

Behind freshman opposite Jaylen Jasper, Stanford earned its first win of the season with a 25-23, 25-13, 25-20 win over No. 14 Ball State, Saturday, at Worthen Arena.
Jasper led all players with 17 kills on .382 hitting and tallied six digs and three of the team’s five aces. Setter Paul Bischoff recorded a double-double with 30 assists and 10 digs. He also had four kills and a .444 attack percentage against the Cardinals.
Stanford (1-4) hit .245 as a team, while holding Ball State (2-2) to a .066 attack percentage – the lowest by a Cardinal opponent this season. Stanford was strong defensively, out digging the Cardinals 44-29.
Redshirt senior Kevin Rakestraw had a season-high five blocks to go with three kills, while freshman middle blocker Kyler Presho went 4-0-5 (.800) and had two blocks and an ace.
Freshman JP Reilly made his collegiate debut, recording three kills, five digs and two blocks in two sets played. Senior libero Evan Enriques totaled seven digs and a season-best six assists.
Stanford kept Ball State out of system as no Cardinals player posted more than seven kills and two hit negative for the match. Stanford registered a sideout rate of 70 percent for the match, while Ball State was at 52 percent.
Stanford returns to The Farm for its home opener on Wednesday against CSUN. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Burnham Pavilion.

The Ball State men’s volleyball team suffered its second straight loss with a 3-0 sweep by Stanford Saturday night.
The Cardinals tallied 27 kills, led by Blake Reardon‘s seven. Mitch Weiler and Matt Szews added five with Matt Walsh and Ben Chinnici each knocking down three. Ball State has 26 assists, 16 of which were credited to Courtland Scharenborg. Weiler led the team with nine of Ball State’s 29 digs. Nick LaVanchy and Adam Wessel each added six digs. Anthony Lebryk led the team with six block assists. The team tallied 22 total blocks.
Set one saw eight tied scores and three lead changes. The Stanford Cardinal were able to pull away, winning the first set (25-23) on an Eric Beatty kill. Ball State tallied 12 kills, six digs and 13 total blocks in the opening set. Walsh and Weiler led the team with three kills apiece.
The second set seemed to be more than Ball State could handle. The Cardinals fell 25-13. The Cardinals were held to only six kills and a negative hitting percentage. Reardon and Chinnici each tallied two kills. Wessel and Lavanchy both had four digs apiece is set two.
A closer third set was ended on a Stanford kill, securing the match with a 25-20 victory. The closing set was highlighted by three Reardon kills and five Weiler digs.
The 14th ranked Ball State Cardinals (2-2) will look to bounce back into the win column next weekend with Sacred Heart and Harvard. Sacred Heart will come to town Friday, Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. followed by Harvard on Saturday, Jan. 21.
