Tuesday was a day of qualification at the Kish Island Three Star with eight teams making it through to the main draw after two rounds of matches.
Two Ukrainian sides, two from Germany and one each from France, Russia, Lithuania and Italy earned the right to move on to the main draw, which begins Wednesday.
Americans Trevor Crabb and Skylar Del Sol won their opening round qualifying match, but were ousted by Russia’s Konstantin Semenov/Ilya Leshukov in round 2. The Russians were making their FIVB World Tour debut as a duo, although Semenov is a seasoned veteran, having finishing fourth at the Rio Olympics.
Eric Zaun and Adam Roberts lost in straight sets to Thailand’s Surin Jongklang/Adisorn Khaolumtarn in the opening round.
The duos were vying to join fellow Americans Stafford Slick/Casey Patterson and Bill Kolinske/Miles Evans in the main draw.
Five Iranian teams looked to impress the home crowd, but all fell in the opening round of qualifying.
