Giba (Gilberto Filho) and Cristina Pirv are still volleyball superstars even years after their retirement. Unfortunately, their fame and international success brought them together in a marriage that culminated in a tumultuous divorce that still makes headlines today.
Its most recent chapter came in the form of a 60 day arrest warrant, which was quickly overturned in court, as Cristina Pirv is accusing Giba of not having fulfilled his alimony and child support obligations with her and the couple’s 2 kids.
Giba, who is the president of the FIVB Athletes’ Commission, is currently in PyeongChang promoting snow volleyball for the institution. He commented on the facts on his personal Instagram page, denying that there was ever an arrest warrant, and that the financial values set by Brazilian courts are not coherent with his actual income:
“OFFICIAL NOTE:
On the recent news involving my name, I have some clarifications: – The arrest warrant was not even issued, and the Court in a few hours overturned the decision, in an unequivocal acknowledgment that there was never any reason for the arrest. – I pay in monthly child support a value that is more than fair and sufficient for my children, Nicoll and Patrick, to have an above than average quality of life.
I offered to pay, through scholarships, besides the amount I pay, the tuition of my children in one of the best schools in Curitiba, which is close to their home, but this proposal was denied by her. The mother of my children asks, in court proceedings, a pension based in my income from my playing days In our divore, I left her several properties, in Brazil and in Romania, besides the custody of the children. I also had to dispose of some of my assets to pay off debts left by her while we were married.
Last year I moved from Rio de Janeiro to Curitiba in order to get closer to my children and asked for shared custody, which is about to be granted, based on legislation, which is another reason my ex-wife insists in absurd values. Patrick and Nicoll can attest that I am doing the possible and the impossible for their happiness – solely and exclusively. Let the joy of both be seen when they are with me. It is for them, and only for them, that I pay the monthly pension monthly.
My part as a parent, I am doing. I lay my head peacefully on the pillow with the feeling that I do not let my children lack anything. Thank you all for the strength and positive energy at the moment! Those who know me know the father and the man that I am … and I would never let anything lack for my children! A great Sunday everyone!!!”
Cristina Pirv’s lawyer stated to Globo.com that Giba owns his client about 10 months worth of child support and that he will once again ask for Giba’s arrest as soon as possible. Pirv, who recently came out of a 12-year retirement to play in Brazil’s B league, rebutted Giba’s note on Instagram:
“THE TRUTH ABOUT GIBA
Faced with Giba’s official note, full of lies, which he released today in his social media, I feel obliged to reveal some facts that will show the kind of man who is the true Giba. I am confident that today, we women, have a voice even when men like this try to shut us up.
THE 5 BIGGEST LIES OF GIBA’S OFFICIAL NOTE
1. His arrest was decreed, so much so that it was necessary for his lawyer to request a preliminary injunction to suspend the decree provisionally. It was maneuver for him to gain time
2. When he says he pays the pension I asked for on a monthly basis, he is lying twice. First because he offered to pay the amount he paid, I did not ask for that value. The second lie is the fulfillment of that commitment, which does not exist. He owes ten months of pension and that is his arrest was ordered, as everyone knows by now. In some months he pays no amount, in some months he pays only 20% of the value.
3. He says he left me property in Romania after our divorce. He never had any real estate in Romania. I already owned these properties and only kept them.
4. More than 50% of the pension goes to my children’s school, which I can prove, and as everyone knows, no one lives only in school, as the rest of the money is destined to maintain my children’s feeding, leisure and shelter. It is not for me that he should pay the pension, but for the children themselves. His lack of responsibility to his children is what most shocks me.
5. Giba further says in his official note that I denied the scholarship offered by him to our children. This is one of the lies that most upset me because I personally, after accepting this possibility, took the children to this new school, but they themselves asked us to keep them in their old one. They did not identify with the new school, as they had already made a lot of friends in their old one.
I would like to close this text saying that everything I said, I can prove it, contrary to the absurd note he divulged, full of lies. It is not my version against his, but the truth against a reality that he tries to make people believe.”
Will we see the face of a generation in Brazil locked behind bars?
