Two Volleyball Players Up For U SPORTS Top Awards

Two volleyball players are up for the U SPORTS 25^th annual Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) Awards, which recognize the top male and female athletes from U SPORTS, or Canadian universities.

Danielle Brisebois of the University of British Columbia and Ryan Sclater of Trinity Western are two of eight nominees for the awards, both representing the Canada West Conference. The male and female BLG Award winners receive a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship.

Brisebois was named the Canada West Female Athlete of the Year after averaging 4.7 points per set for the Thunderbirds en route to the national championship. The 6-foot left side from Bolton, Ontario, tallied 3.86 kills per set on a .270 hitting percentage, while also serving up 38 aces and adding 1.82 digs and 0.75 blocks per set. Brisebois, who earned MVP honors at the USports Championship, was a member of the Canadian side at the 2015 Summer Universiade and 2016 FIVB World Grand Prix and later a member of the Senior National Team.

Sclater was the Canada West Male Athlete of the Year after helping his Trinity Western squad to its second straight championship. The Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, native averaged 5.0 point per set, including 4.29 kills per set and a .308 hitting percentage. He also served up 32 aces and managed 1.36 and 0.57 blocks per set. Sclater tallied 369 kills, ninth most in conference history.

Each of the 56 U SPORTS schools nominates a male and female for consideration for the BLG Awards. Each of the four conferences: the Atlantic University Sport (AUS), Reseau de sport etudiant du Quebec (RSEQ), Ontario University Athletics (OUA) and Canada West Universities Athletic Association (CWUAA) select one male and female to represent the conference in the finals.

BLG winners are selected by the Canadian Athletic Foundation, a not-for-profit Board of Trustees made up of 19 members representing major corporations from five cities, established to protect the integrity of the selection process.

U SPORTS is the national brand for University Sports in Canada. U SPORTS is the Canadian version of the NCAA. It includes 12,000 student-athletes from 56 universities. Teams compete for 21 national championships in 12 sports.
