Despite a decent effort, Australia’s Louise Bawden/Taliqua Clancy fall to American’s April Ross/Lauren Fendrick in straight sets 2-0, (21-16, 21-13). The Americans become the first team on either the men’s or women’s side of the tournament to win their pool.
For the most part, the match was a clean game, with a total of 17 errors made by both team, the difference though was the American’s were more effective on the attack.
Both Ross and Fendrick mixed up their serving shots throughout the match, going fairly evenly to both Bawden/Clancy. The Australian’sserved more difficult angles on the serve and from numerous places on the back line, however, the American’s were able to handle them easily, with only two service aces against them.
On the attack, Ross threw down almost every shot you can imagine, throwing off the Australians. She was successful going hard cross, line, short and deep, committing just two errors and being blocked by Bawden once. Fendrick hit a number of different shots, mainly hitting tough angles.
The Australian’s were fairly unsuccessful on the attack, not mixing up their shots and becoming predictable to the Americans. Most of their shots were hit cross court, but not at such an angle that they were able to beat the defensive player. Throughout the match, Fendrick adjusted her block, making it easier for Ross to pick up on the Australian attack.
The American’s won Pool K, dropping just one set on their way to a 3-0 start. The win moves them on to the elimination portion of the tournament on August 3 in the Round of 32.
