Arizona indoor coach Dave Rubio added an eighth newcomer to his squad as junior Mackenzie Hernandez made the transfer from community college athletics to Arizona with two years of eligibility remaining.

The 5’11” setter from Bakersfield, California played in 55 matches during her two-year tenure with the Renegades, logging 1200 assists and 6.32 assists per set. Hernandez will also be an asset on defense and from the serving line, registering 2.15 digs per set and 72 service aces.

Hernandez led Bakersfield College to the Western State-East Conference championship, guaranteeing them an automatic spot in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The co-captain even garnered All-Southern California Regional team honors.

This success didn’t end with the indoor season, Hernandez carried her momentum into Bakersfield College’s beach season, where her and her partner Hannah Pope were able to earn a berth in the CCCAA State Beach Tournament after taking third place at the Western State Conference Individual Doubles Beach Championships. As the Renegades number 1 beach team, Hernandez and Pope were able to help the team qualify as a team for the CCCAA SoCal Regional Beach Team Championships after just creating a beach program a year ago.

Hernandez joins an Arizona team that went 20-15 last year, finishing eighth in the Pac-12. There, she will compete with freshman setter Jaclyn Inclan and sophomore Julia Patterson for playing time.
