2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

Brazil’s Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt continue their strong run at the 2017 Vienna Beach World Championships, with a convincing win over Latvia’s Rihards Finsters and Edgars Tocs 2-0, (21-15, 21-17).

The win moves the Brazilian pair to the Round of 16, while the Latvians will head home, as they are eliminated from the tournament.

Schmidt’s strong top spin serve proved to be a problem for the Latvian pair as he managed to get three service aces. Tocs took the brunt of the tough Schmidt serve, as he took the majority of the balls. This forced him to come eye to eye with a big Cerutti block, being blocked seven times from the outside position. He did find his success on the sand by hitting around Cerutti for a line shot and sharp cross shots.

“We played them before, we know that it’s difficult to receive the serves but that wasn’t the problem. The problem was the setting. We played them close to the net and Alison is eating them up like cupcakes,” said Tocs.

Cerutti/Schmidt had equal chances at attacking the ball, finding the sand with a mixture of shots around the court. Cerutti hit most of his kills on the cross court shot and deep to the back line, while Schmidt found success with a sharper angle shot and round the block and away from the back row defender. The Latvian serve was no trouble for the Brazilians, allowing for them to be set up in a great attacking position.

The Brazilian’s will play a strong Canadian team in Chaim Schalk/Ben Saxton in the Round of 16.
