The University of San Francisco will have the services of two former Cal Bear players as graduates Laura Leap and Sabrina Blackwell join the Don roster.

Blackwell, a 5-6 libero, spent the last three seasons at Cal, pulling up 286 digs and adding 28 assists and 19 aces to the team’s tallies. She saw action in 30 matches in 2016, posting double-digit dig tallies three times, including a season-best 14 against Oregon State.

In 2015, Blackwell played in 25 matches for the Bears, averaging 2.41 digs per set and chipping in 13 aces. The two-time Pa-12 All-Academic honorable mention selection managed five double-digit totals, including a career-best 17 against Oregon State, while also chipping in four assists. The San Jose, California, native served up a career-best three aces against Stanford in 2015.

Blackwell graduated in 2017 with a degree in media studies and will be persuing a master’s degree in entrepreneurship and innovation at USF.

Thousand Oaks, California native Laura Leap spent her first three and a half years of college at Cal and came away with a degree. The 6-5 middle blocker will spend her final year of eligibility at the University of San Francisco, where she hopes to make an impact on the Dons, while earning her master’s degree in sport management.

Off the court in Berkeley, Leap spearheaded the Bears’ volunteer effort with KEEN, a nonprofit that provides free recreational opportunity to children and young adults with disabilities.

As a prepster, Leap was the No. 93 Senior Ace as rated by PrepVolleyball.com and was a two-time All-Tri-Valley League selection at Thousand Oaks High School.

Leap will be the tallest player on the USF roster, ahead of senior middle blocker Marjolin Oskam, who is 6-4.

USF, which went 4-27 in 2016, opens the season at home against Nevada, Fresno State and San Jose State.
