Cal Poly Sweeps Vanguard, San Jose State in Regular Season Finale

PISMO BEACH, Calif. — The Cal Poly beach volleyball team finished out its regular season Friday by sweeping both of its opponents, Vanguard and San Jose State, 5-0 on the courts of Pismo Beach.

The No. 4 Mustangs finish the regular season 25-5, the best record in program history.

In their first match of the day against the Lions, Cal Poly held them to single digits in 8 of the 10 sets.

At the No. 1 spot, senior Taylor Nelson and junior Adlee Van Winden picked up the win 21-10, 21-5. They finish the regular season with a record of 21-3 as a pair and are now the pair with the most wins in program history.

Sophomore Emily Sonny and junior Samantha Manley easily defeated Vanguard’s No. 2 pairing 21-8, 21-5 to finish with a regular season record of 26-4, the best in program history. Senior Raeann Greisen and freshman Macy Gordon won their match at the No. 3 position 21-2, 21-13 to finish their season 11-3.

Juniors Dora Beilin and Kassandra Wright won their match at the No. 4 spot 21-7, 21-8 and freshmen Sjea Anderson and Livy Lee completed the sweep for the Mustangs at the No. 5 spot, winning 21-5, 21-9.

In their final match of the day against the Spartans, Sonny and Manley got Cal Poly off to a strong start, winning 21-12, 21-9 at the No. 2 spot. That was followed by Greisen and Gordon picking up a 21-11, 23-21 at the No. 4 position.

At the No. 1 spot, sophomore Torrey Van Winden and freshman Tiadora Miric won 21-14, 21-15 to clinch the win for the Mustangs. The pair finishes the regular season with a record of 17-6.

Nelson and Adlee Van Winden won their second match of the day, this time at the No. 3 spot 21-15, 21-12 to give Cal Poly a 4-0 lead. Senior Hannah Hubbard and sophomore Heather Pembroke completed the sweep for the Mustangs by winning their match at the No. 5 spot 21-13, 19-21, 15-8. They finish the regular season with a 9-4 record.

Cal Poly now gets ready to play in the Big West Conference Tournament, which will be held April 27-29 in Honolulu.
