CONFERENCE SUMMARY

Sunday was anything but straightforward in the Pac-12 conference. The conference saw four upsets and its top team, #2 Stanford get pushed, but survive on the road. First, it was #20 Washington State coming from two sets down to upset #18 Arizona in Tucson. Then it was Cal going on the road and rallying to defeat (RV) Utah to pick up its first win in conference play. Arizona State, who also received votes this past week, picked up a huge win by sweeping #14 Washington at home. #19 Oregon concluded its Los Angeles road trip by sweeping #9 USC. Lastly, #2 Stanford was pushed in three extremely competitive sets, but came out on top against #24 Colorado in Boulder to remain undefeated in the conference.

#20 WASHINGTON STATE DEF. #18 ARIZONA 3-2 (20-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-20, 15-13)

  • Washington State moves to 13-3, 4-2; Arizona falls to 14-4, 3-3 in the Pac-12.

  • Outside hitter McKenna Woodford led Washington State offensively with 18 kills while hitting .375. Woodford also registered her 1,000 career kill.
  • Outside hitter Taylor Mims and middle blocker Ella Lajos each chipped in with 17 kills for the Cougars.
  • Washington state setter Ashley Brown led all players with 59 assists and added 11 digs.
  • Outside hitter Kendra Dhalke was the star for Arizona. Dhalke finished with a match-high 23 kills and added 13 digs. Middle blocker Devyn Cross was stellar offensively as well, finishing with 14 kills while committing just two errors, good for a .545 clip.

HOW IT HAPPENED

#20 Washington State rallied from a two sets to zero deficit against #18 Arizona Sunday afternoon to defeat the Wildcats in five sets. After dropping their first two conference matches, the Cougars have now won four straight.

The first two sets started out great for Arizona. The Wildcats grabbed the lead early in set one and then closed out the opener on a 6-2 run for a 25-20 victory. Then in the second, Arizona trailed most of the set, before finally tying the score at 20 apiece. The Wildcats closed the set on a 5-2 run for a 25-22 win.

Arizona looked as if it was going to close out the Cougars in three sets as the Wildcats grabbed the early lead. Washington State rallied and tied it at 21, but then Arizona charged ahead 23-21 and was two points form the match. But the Cougars refused to go away, stealing the final four points and the set, 25-23.

The Wildcats jumped out to the lead in the fourth set as well, but a 9-3 surge by Washington State put the Cougars in front 16-14. Washington State then closed out the set on a 5-1 run to force a fifth set.

In the fifth, Washington State opened the aggressor as it raced out to an early 6-2 lead. The Wildcats refused to go away as they clawed back into the match and tied the set at 13. The Cougars didn’t flinch and capitalized on a kill and an Arizona error to wrap up the set, 15-13.

CAL DEF. (RV) UTAH 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 9-25, 25-23, 15-10)

  • Cal improves to 9-8, 1-5; Utah falls to 9-8, 1-5 in the Pac-12.

  • The Golden Bears were led by outside hitter Mima Mirkovic, who tallied 16 kills and 13 digs.
  • The Utes were led by outside hitters, Megan Yett‘s 14 kills and Dani Drews, who tallied 11 kills.
  • Neither team was efficient offensively. Cal committed 33 attack errors and hit .144 while Utah made 28 errors and hit .160.

#2 STANFORD DEF. #24 COLORADO 3-0 (27-25, 25-23, 25-22)

  • Stanford improves to 14-1, 6-0; Colorado falls to 10-7, 2-4 in the Pac-12.

  • Outside hitter Kathryn Plummer led the Cardinal offensively, tallying 23 kills while hitting .400. Outside hitter Meghan McClure added 11 kills, and middle blocker Tami Alade chipped in with 10 for the Cardinal.
  • Colorado was led by outside hitter Justine Spann, who put down 18 kills. Fellow outside hitter Alexa Smith added 17 kills for the Buffaloes.
  • Both teams were crisp in their offensive approaches. The Cardinal hit. 384 and committed just 10 attack errors while Colorado hit .358 and made just 10 errors as well.

(RV) ARIZONA STATE DEF. #14 WASHINGTON 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-22)

  • Arizona State moves to 13-4, 4-2; Washington drops to 12-4, 4-2 in the Pac-12.

  • The Sun Devils were led by middle blocker Carmen Unzue, who finished with eight kills. Fellow middle blocker Megan Bedie chipped in with seven kills, but hit .636 from the floor.
  • Outside hitter Kara Bajema was the star for the Huskies, finishing with a double-double with 17 kills and 11 digs.
  • Neither team hit particularly well, as Arizona State managed .176 and Washington hit just .150.
  • The win was Arizona State’s first over Washington since Nov. 21, 2012 and its first sweep of the Huskies since Sept. 22, 2000.

#19 OREGON DEF. #9 USC 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-20)

  • Oregon moves to 11-5, 4-2; USC falters to 12-5, 4-2 in the Pac-12.

  • Oregon used a balanced offensive approach to attack the Trojans. Middle blocker Ronika Stone and outside hitter Taylor Borup both finished with 10 kills while Borup had a double-double, tallying 11 digs as well.
  • Middle blocker Lauren Page chipped in with seven kills, but hit .500 and committed just one error.
  • The Trojans were led by outside hitter Khalia Lanier, who registered a match-high 16 kills. Outside hitter Brooke Botkin tallied 13 kills, but committed nine errors and hit just .100.
  • The Ducks hit .290 as a team while the Trojans only hit .200.
  • After dropping two straight matches in Eugene, the Ducks enjoyed a weekend sweep in Los Angeles, as they swept UCLA on Friday.
  • The loss is USC’s first this season at the Galen Center, as the Trojans were 5-0 entering Sunday’s match.
