2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

The reigning 2016 Olympic and 2015 World Champions, Alison Cerutti/Bruno Schmidt proved why they have been a dominant team on the World Tour with a straight set win over Chileans Marco Grimalt/Esteban Grimalt 2-0, (21-14, 21-13).

The win for the Brazilians puts them in first place in Pool E, not having dropped a single set in three matches. Despite all of their former success, this season has been less than ideal for the Brazilians, as they have not been as dominant as they would like.

“We are not having the best season by far. After we had the last two years we pushed so much, pressure and everything. Sometimes it is important to go a little bit down to come back stronger and I think we are doing this,” said Schmidt.

The Brazilian’s focused their serves to Esteban in the match, setting him up against the strong Cerutti block. Despite on serve, the Chileans tried to keep Cerutti away from the net by serving him throughout the match. This proved effective in that way but Cerutti was able to put down 15 kills in the match using sharp cross shots around the block. Schmidt didn’t see many sets due to the Chilean game plan but was successful in half of his swings.

Since Esteban was served so much in the match he was relied on to hit the ball, which he was not super successful at, finding the sand only of really tough angle shots around the block.

Both of the teams will move on to the Round of 32 which is set to begin on August 3.
