Day 2 of pool play has concluded in Australia at the Commonwealth Games and just like Day 1, just two of the nine matches went past straight sets, both coming in men’s action and both by the same teams as Friday.

New Zealanders Ben O’Dea and Sam O’Dea scored their second straight 2-1 win in as many days, besting Mozambique’s Carlos Acacio and Delcio Soares after dropping the opening set 21-19. A 6-0 advantage in blocks, five by Sam, and four aces lifted the O’Deas to victory.

Scotland’s Robin Miedzybrodzkl and Seain Cook also notched a tiebreak win for the second straight day, this time defeating Patrick Lombi and Abubakar Kamara of Sierra Leone. Lombi/Kamara took the opening set 21-19, but couldn’t hold off the Scots. Miedzybrodzkl/Cook served up six aces, five by Cook, but had to overcome nine service miscues in the match.

Two other men’s teams notched their second victories of the competition: England’s Chris Gregory/Jake Sheaf and Canada’s Sam Schachter and Sam Pedlow.

On the women’s side, New Zealanders Shaunna Polley and Kelsie Wills made their debut with a straight-set win over Charlotte Nzayisenga/Denyse Mutatsimpundu (Rwanda). Vanuatu’s Linline Matuatu/Miller Pata, which have made a name for themselves on the FIVB stage, also picked up a straight-set victory in their tournament opener.

Australia’s Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar is 2-0 after crushing Grenada’s Renisha Stafford/Thornia Williams 21-2, 21-11.
