Something more than berth for Champions League’s Final 4 was at stake for VfB Friedrichshafen fans today when the team took the court against Poland’s Zaksa: The team’s head coach, Vital Heynen, who is quite the character, promised its fans, in case of a win, 2500 liters of beer for the first 500 people in attendance. That comes to about 700 gallons, or 1.3 gallons of beer (5 liters) per fan, or roughly 13 cans. That is A LOT of beer. That is a true homage to German national identity. According to a recent study, the country is the 5th largest consumer of beer in the world, with a 105 liters (27 gallons) yearly per capita consumption. To put things into perspective, The USA comes in 17th in the list with a per capita consumption of 76 liters (20 gallons).

Almost 4,000 fans were in attendance for the match, hoping to get a bit of the prize. They had all their hopes frustrated though, as VfB was eliminated from the competition after suffering a 3-0 defeat.

Here are the post match reactions:

Zaksa did a very good job tonight. We have to accept that the Polish champion is a better team than the championship leader in Germany. Congratulations to Zaksa. Their attack was amazing. And we learned a lot tonight.”Vital Heynen

“I’m very proud of my team and the fans tonight. They did very well in attacking and defending. Now we have our ticket for the Final Four. I hope our fans will come to Kazan like they always follow us through Europe.”Zaksa‘s coach, Andrea Gardini
