Coppola/Nuss, Sonny/Van Winden, McNamara Twins Among WUBC Pool Winners

2018 World University Beach Championships

The eight pools titles were awarded on Tuesday and the first elimination round finished setting the table for Wednesday’s second round action. The bottom eight teams also faced off for seeding in the semifinals and loser semifinals for 25th to 32nd place.

The eight pool winners, all of which went 3-0, were:

  • Pool A: Claire Coppola/Kristen Nuss (USA)
  • Pool B: Emily Sonny/Torrey Van Winden (USA)
  • Pool C: Maria Belen Carro/Paula Soria (Spain)
  • Pool D: Kaho Sakaguchi/Reika Murakami (Japan)
  • Pool E: Fabienne Geiger/Anja Licka (Switzerland)
  • Pool F: Katja Stam/Pleun Ympa (Netherlands)
  • Pool G: Nicole Laird/Brittany Kendall (Australia)
  • Pool H: Megan McNamara/Nicole McNamara (Canada)

Four of the eight title matches were decided in tiebreak. Laird/Kendall were the lone team to win in three sets after dropping the opening stanza, rallying past Taipei’s Tzu-Yi Pan/Ya-Hsuan Yu 16-21, 25-23, 15-8. Also going the distance were Coppola/Nuss, Carro/Soria and Stam/Ympa.

Coppola/Nuss edged Manolina Konstantinou/Zoi Konstantopoulou (Cypress) 21-15, 19-21, 15-11. Carro/Soria moved past Asami Shiba/Satono Ishitsubo (Japan) 21-10, 17-21, 15-10 and Stam/Ympa overcame a set 2 setback vs. Tereza Kotlasova/Daniela Resova (Czech Republic) 21-12, 18-21, 21-19

Round 1 action featured the second and third place teams from each pool, with the winners earning the right to face the Top 8 in Round 2. Two of the eight matches went to tiebreak, with New Zealand’s Bain/McDonald rallying past French pair Ophelia Lusson/Mia Guyot Polverini (17-21, 21-14, 15-13) and Swiss duo Zoe Verge-Depre/Esmee Bobner edging Konstantinou/Konstantopoulou.
