The Dominican Republic added another straight-set win on Wednesday to wrap up Pool B play at the Pan Am Cup, this time topping Peru, to clinch the top spot in the group and advance straight to the semifinals.
Cuba swept Trinidad and Tobago, but had to await the result of the Canada/Chile match to learn its playoffs fate. In the end, Canada won, but Cuba earned the quarterfinals spot based on point-ratio (1.075 to 1.055).

Heidy Casanova Alvarez put down 15 kills and her teammates chipped in 11 blocks and seven aces in a sweep of Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday.
The Cubans won all major statistical categories, limiting T&T to just eight blocks and two aces and forcing 23 miscues.
“The technical staff is very glad with the development achieved by young players like Casanova and Gracia, among others, because that was our main goal coming here,” Cuban coach Wilfredo Robinson said. “Now we have to wait for the score of the match between Canada and Chile to know if we are in the quarterfinals.”
Regla Rainierys Gracia Gonzalez added 13 points for Cuba, including eight kills and four aces.
Krystle Esdelle tallied a match-high 16 points, with 15 kills and a block. Darlene Ramdin added eight points, with seven kills and a block.
“We had many ups and downs and today we made too many mistakes especially when we were narrowing the score margin,” T&T coach Francisco Cruz said. “That’s part of the process of development. They need to play more tournaments of this level.”
Canada 3, Chile 0
Canada dominated Chile, more than doubling the Chilean points output in a sweep. Canada scored 75 points, while allowing just 37. The Canadians racked up 44 kills, while allowing 22, and outblocked Chile 9-1 and outserved them 3-2.
Shainah Joseph and Michaela Reesor led the way for the Canadians with 14 points apiece. Alissa Coulter added 12 points. Reesor downed a match-high 14 kills, while Joseph and Coulter added 12 and 11 respectively. Lucille Charuk and Marisa Field chipped in four blocks apiece to lead the team at the net.
Captain Catalina Melo put down 11 kills, while Beatriz Novoa added six points, with four kills and two aces.
Dominican Republic 3, Peru 0
The Dominican Republic finished a clean sweep of Pool B with a 3-0 win over Peru.
The Dominican Republic outscored Peru 38-29 in attacks, 6-4 in blocks and 8-1 in aces.
“Our serves were very effective which helped our blocking and defense,” Dominican Republic coach Marcos Kwiek said. “When you are aggressive you have to run some risks. I am satisfied with the performance of my team.”
Bethania De La Cruz De Pena led a balanced DR attack with 11 points, including eight kills and three aces. Brayelin Martinez (9), Annerys Victoria Vargas Valdez (8), Isabel Yonkaira Paola Pena (8) and Jineiry Martinez (7) followed. Valdez tallied a team-best three blocks.
Carla Rueda managed 11 points, with eight putaways and three blocks, to lead Peru. Jessenia Uceda and Katherinne Olemar added six points apiece, all on kills.
“Dominican Republic is a team with a lot of power at the net,” Peruvian captain Mirtha Uribe said. “We need to continue playing with the same energy because we want to be on the podium with one of the medals.”
