Double Victories: #19 Michigan, Colorado State Win 2 Each in Ann Arbor

Michigan Challenge

Michigan registered its program record eighth straight sweep to start the season, outdoing Oakland and LSU on Friday to open the Michigan Challenge. The team’s first win of the day marked the 600th career victory for head coach Mark Rosen. Colorado State also posted two wins on the day.

Day 1 Results

(RV) Colorado State def. LSU 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23)

  • CSU outhit the Tigers .265 to .174
  • Colorado State led by as many as six in Set 3 (16-10) and led by five late (21-16) before LSU tied it up at 23. A Kirstie Hillyer kill and a block by junior middle Paulina Hougaard-Jensen and junior outside Olivia Nicholson ended the comeback attempt.
  • Redshirt sophomore outside Breanna Runnels downed a match-high 15 kills for the Rams, her fifth straight double-digit kill effort of the year.
  • Sophomore outside Taylor Bannister led LSU in kills for the seventh straight match, posting 14 putaways and just missing a double-double with nine digs.

#19 Michigan def. Oakland 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-15)

  • Wolverine head coach Mark Rosen joined the 600 win club, making him the 18th active head coach to do so and fourth in the Big Ten.
  • Michigan hit at a season-best .415 clip in the match, including a match-high .455 effort in Set 3.
  • Carly Skjodt notched an 11-kill, 10-dig double-double to lead the Wolverine attack.

#19 Michigan def. LSU 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-20)

  • LSU could not get out of its own way in the match, committing 26 hitting errors and hitting -.019 for the match.
  • Michigan kept the Tigers off balance with five aces, while outdoing its foes 39-24 in kills and hitting .261.
  • Freshman middle Whitney Foreman put up seven blocks for LSU, helping the Tigers to a 10-8 lead in stuffs.
  • The Wolverines jumped out to a 5-0 lead and cruised to a 19-10 advantage in Set 3. LSU pulled within four at 23-19 and 24-20, but were done in by a final hitting error.

(RV) Colorado State def. Oakland 3-1 (14-25, 25-15, 25-16, 25-17)

  • Colorado State piled up 14 blocks in the match and limited Oakland to hitting efforts of .031 and .027 in the final two sets of the win
  • Redshirt junior middle Kirstie Hillyer led the Rams at the net with team bests of 13 kills and eight blocks, while hitting .462.
