The No. 1 Trojans (37-1) earned the right to defend their 2016 title by taking down South Carolina, Hawai’i and Pepperdine via sweeps in earlier rounds in the winner’s bracket.

Hawai’i’s (28-6) road to the semifinals featured an opening round 3-1 win over No. 4 seed Florida State, the loss to USC in round 2, and two wins in the contender’s bracket (3-0 vs. No. 7 LSU and 3-2 vs. FSU).

Pepperdine (26-4) advanced through the winner’s bracket with a 3-0 win over No. 6 Long Beach State and a 3-1 win over No. 2 UCLA, before falling to USC in the winner’s bracket semifinal.
