Kazakhstan, Iran, South Korea and Australia sailed through the preliminary round with perfect 3-0 marks, clinching the top spot in their respective groups with victories on Day 3 of the tournament. Kazakhstan, Iran and Australia finished the opening round with sweeps, while Korea edged Japan in five sets.
Kazakhstan, which struggled to an 11th place finish in World League Group 3 just a few weeks ago, made quick work of Saudi Arabia to move forward out of Pool A. Maxim Michshenko downed 13 points, all on kills, while Anton Kuznetsov put up seven blocks.
The top two teams in each pool move on to the event quarterfinals, but first there will be a classification round. The eight teams qualifying for the quarterfinals were divided into two pools, while the remaining eight teams were split into two pools. Pool E of the winners bracket included South Korea, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Japan, while Pool F features Australia, Iran, Chinese Taipei and China.
Results and points from matches between teams within a pool that have already played will be counted in the classification round. South Korea and Kazakhstan kick off Pool E with two points apiece, while Australia and Iran boast a three point edge in Pool F due to preliminary round results.
Classification matches will take place July 27 and 29. The placing matches for ninth through 16th place are set for July 30-31. Quarterfinals will be played July 30.
