2017 FIVB BEACH VOLLEYBALL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS – VIENNA

The women’s Lucky Loser round of the FIVB Beach World Championships has concluded with four teams advancing to the Round of 32 while the remaining teams are disqualified.

The teams that participated in the Lucky Losers bracket didn’t have enough points to automatically qualify for the Round of 32 as the third place finishers. The top four third place teams automatically moved on while the bottom eight competed for a spot in the elimination rounds.

The losers in the Lucky Losers phase of the tournament will finish at the Beach World Championships as the 33rd place finishers earning $4,800.00 to split as a team.

Lidiannis Echeverria/Leila Martinez of Cuba came into the competition as the #26 seed and they took down Russia’s #36 seeded Ekaterina Birlova/Nadezda Makroguzova in straight sets. Also taking just two sets to advance was Ana Gallay/Maria Zonta of Argentina as they defeated Taylor Pischke/Jamie Lynn Broder of Canada.

The other two matches of the round took three sets to complete the advancement to the elimination rounds. Fan Wang/Yuan Yue of China fought to take down Isabel Schneider/Victoria Bieneck of Germany. This match was big as they are both top-25 seeded teams, with Yue/Wang expected to do well as the second seed in their pool.

Julia Grossner/Nadja Glenzke of Germany was the final pair to advance to the Round of 32 after taking down Gabriela Filippo/Erika Bobadilla of Paraguay in three.

The Round of 32 will begin on August 2 for the women’s side of the tournament.
