Germans Behlen/Schneider Win Phnom Penh Gold in FIVB Tour Debut

Phnom Penh Two-Star

Germans Anna Behlen/Sarah Schneider made quite a splash in their FIVB World Tour debut, taking home the gold medal at the two-star Anchor International Beach Volleyball Carnival after a rallying for a three-set win in the championship match on Sunday.

The duo, which started the tournament in qualification rounds, bested New Zealand’s Julia Tilly/Alice Bain in straight sets in the semifinals to set up the championship matchup with third-seeded Japanese pair Sayaka Mizoe/Suzuka Hashimoto. Behlen/Schneider won six straight-set affairs to set up the gold medal meeting.

The three-set affair with Behlen/Schneider was the second of the day for the Japanese pair, which outlasted Russians Ksenia Dabizha/Daria Mastikova in a semifinal tiebreak just a few hours earlier.

The Russian pair went on earn the bronze with a straight set win over the Kiwis. The podium finish was the second straight for Dabizha/Mastikova, who won the Langkawi One-Star just one week ago.

Suzuka Hashimoto/Sayaka Mizoe (Japan) def. Suzuka Hashimoto/Sayaka Mizoe (Japan) 21-13, 17-21, 17-15
