After winning the 2016 5A (second largest classification) volleyball state championship in Kansas, Shawnee Heights head coach Laura Curry has decided to resign to spend more time with her three children.
Curry spent the last three seasons with the team which resulted in a 114-17 record while there, two third-place finishes, and a state championship. Their most recent run was the one that resulted in the 5A State Championship victory this past October.
According to WIBW Curry told them that she’s making the decision to leave the team so that she can spend more time with her three kids.
Curry told WIBW, “My husband and I can’t be in three places at once. But your kids come first. I’m a mom before I’m anything.”
Although Curry is leaving her role as head coach, she’s still willing to be somewhat involved, shying away rather from a full commitment than the sport itself.
Curry told WIBW, “I really don’t think about this as my last season. Whoever the coach is, I told [athletic director David] Wonnell that I’d be more than willing to help out if they needed someone at certain times. I just can’t make that full-time commitment.”
Curry plans to go to as many matches as she can make, and plans to continue coaching at a club level.
