Olathe-NW Avenges Early-Season Losses to Win Kansas 6A State Titile

  0 Braden Keith | December 26th, 2016 | High School, News

8 teams were named Kansas High School Volleyball Champions in October, led by Olathe-Northwest, who won the 6A Championship in the classification for the state’s largest schools.

The Ravens started off the season with two losses, leaving them in a tough spot to even qualify for the state championship tournament. But they’d later avenge the losses with wins over those same Shawnee Mission East and Blue Valley West teams in the last two rounds of the tournament to win the state title.

6’2″ middle blocker Tyanna Omazic, a senior commit for the University of Illinois, led the Ravens to a 2-1 victory (25-19, 22-25, 25-17). They beat out Blue Valley West and senior First Team AVCA All-American setter Madison Lilley, who is headed to Kentucky next year.

The win was Olathe Northwest’s first in school history. The winners of the three biggest classifications (including Tecumseh-Shawnee Heights and Nebraska commit Jazz Sweet in Class 5A and Rose Hill in Class 4A-Division I) are also first time state champions.

The city of Olathe, the 4th-largest in the state, brought home two titles. In class 2A, Olathe-Heritage Christian also earned their first-ever state title in volleyball.

At the other end of the spectrum, Topeka-Hayden won their 2nd title (Class 4A, Division II), while Silver Lake on their 3rd title in 4 years.

Axtell Public School, with an enrollment of just over 100 students near the Kansas-Nebraska border, won their first state title in the 1A Division II classification.
