Lewis Men Make Quick Work of Saint Francis

A night after a five-set thriller against another Top 15 foe, the eighth-ranked Lewis Flyers made much shorter work of non-conference foe Saint Francis on Saturday. The Flyers outblocked the Red Flash 12-2 and hit at a .418 clip in the 25-19, 25-14, 25-18 victory.

Redshirt freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen led the Lewis attack with 12 kills on a .529 hitting effort, while also adding three blocks. Senior middle blocker John Hodul went 7-for-7 for a perfect hitting night to go with his team-best seven blocks. Redshirt sophomore opposite Mitch Perinar tacked on six kills and four blocks. Trevor Weiskircher and Michael Simmons added seven digs apiece.

Redshirt junior outside Stephen Braswell and senior opposite Jeff Hogan posted eight kills apiece to provide 16 of SFU’s 27 kills. Braswell also served up two aces in the match. Senior setter Adam Kniffen managed a team-high six digs.

Lewis raced out to a 19-8 lead in Set 1, but Saint Francis battled back to within five at 20-15, thanks to three Flyer errors and kills from three different players. The teams split the next eight points, before a Jacob Schmiegelt kill captured Lewis the victory.

After tying at 4-all in Set 2, Lewis mounted a 14-8 lead as the Red Flash committed five errors. SFU was within four at 15-11, but could not stop a 7-0 Flyer run, including a Matt Yoshimoto ace and a pair of Perinar kills. Two more Saint Francis miscues put Lewis ahead 24-13 and a Hodul kill capped the set.

Saint Francis would not go down easy, however, taking an 11-7 lead in Set 3. Lewis knotted the score three times, last at 14, before going up 18-15. Four Coenen kills and three stuffs aided the rally. The Red Flash would get no closer than two the rest of the way as Lewis ended the set on on a 7-2 run.

Romeoville, Ill. – The No. 7 Lewis University men’s volleyball team, led by a match-high 12 kills from redshirt freshman outside hitter Ryan Coenen (Franklin, Wis./Franklin), recorded a .418 (36 kills, 8 errors, 67 attacks) hitting percentage in the Flyers’ 25-19, 25-14, 25-18 non-conference victory over Saint Francis (PA) at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (March 25).

With the win, Lewis improves to 19-6 overall, while the Red Flash is now 9-14.

Lewis sophomore setter Matt Yoshimoto (Ventura, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) dished out a match-high 27 assists, while senior outside hitter Trevor Weiskircher (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and redshirt sophomore libero Michael Simmons (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) collected a match-high seven digs.

Flyer senior middle blocker John Hodul (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) had a match-high seven blocks (1 solo) and notched a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage with seven kills on seven attempts. Lewis enjoyed a 12-2 advantage in blocking.

Lewis returns to action on Tuesday (March 28), as the Flyers welcome local rival Loyola for a 7 PM first serve.

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Saint Francis men’s volleyball team fell to No. 7 Lewis in straight sets on Saturday at Neil Carey Arena. Lewis won 25-19, 25-14, 25-18. Saint Francis drops to 9-14, while Lewis improves to 19-6 on the season.

Stephen Braswell (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) and Jeff Hogan (Northern Cambria, Pa./Northern Cambria) finished with eight kills. Adam Kniffen (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) led the team with a block, 11 assists and six digs. Ryan Coenen led Lewis with 12 kills.

Lewis jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the opening set and forced Saint Francis to call a timeout. The Flyers started to run away with the set but the Flash went on a 6-1 to cut the deficit to five, 20-15, and caused Lewis to burn a timeout. Lewis continued to pressure Saint Francis and took the opening set 25-19.

Tied at 4-4 in the second set, Lewis went on a 4-0 run to lead, 8-4. A Nick Bennett (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) kill trimmed the Lewis lead to two, 10-8. A 5-2 Lewis run proved to be the difference maker, as the Flyers started to pull away, leading 15-10. Lewis cruised to a 25-14 win.

With the set tied at 5-5, SFU took advantage of three Lewis miscues and a kill from Daniel Ford (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) to take an early 9-5 lead. Both teams traded points before the Flyers took an 18-15 advantage. Lewis eventually ran away with the set 25-18.

Saint Francis resumes conference play this weekend against NJIT and Princeton.
